Issues

Mary Rita Luecke has a 40-year track record as a progressive activist. She is running for state representative in the 17th legislative district to further advance issues and policies of importance to her and residents of the Evanston, Glenview, Golf, Morton Grove, Northbrook, Skokie, and Wilmette.

Issues are the life-blood of this campaign. Mary Rita was motivated to run for this open seat as an opportunity to promote progressive values when the need is urgent for policies to resist Trump administration attacks on women, people of color, LGBTQ communities, differently-abled people, immigrants, and others whose rights and liberties are under siege.

With the federal government fully focused on protecting businesses and corporations, rather than families and consumers, states  have an opportunity to step in and protect their residents. Illinois, like many states, already have agencies to monitor and protect the environment, worker safety and health, care in hospitals and nursing homes. They need to be empowered to pick up where the federal government is now leaving off.

Mary Rita's progressive stance already has earned her endorsements from important progressive, grassroots organizations including, Reclaim Chicago, National Nurses United, People's Lobby, Independent Voters of Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO). Her commitment to progressive issues on criminal justice reform earned her the endorsement from nationally acclaimed Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. Her support for progressive taxes array of complex issues facing Illinois and others has earned her the support and endorsements from Rep. Robyn Gabel (18th District) and Will Gizzardi (39th District).

On the next pages Mary Rita explains her position on a variety of key issues facing the state.
